Mint Juleps – Julie Cameron

While sifting through some old files on my computer (what can I say, it had to be done), I came across a bunch of articles I wrote about a million years ago, in a galaxy far, far away. I had a lot of fun writing posts for an herbal kitchen blog I had going on back then, and decided to refresh some of them, and re-post them.

Yes, I realize this particular post would have been better coming out during the Kentucky Derby, but it honestly didn’t occur to me until today.

Besides, any time is a good time for a Mint Julep!

Drinking Mint Juleps in the summertime can be a great way to beat the heat, and stay refreshed.  I believe the best way to enjoy them is by making my own simple syrup infused with Mint to give it that extra minty-fresh flavor.

Mint Juleps

  • 6 oz. bourbon whiskey
  • 5 – 6 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 oz. mint-infused simple syrup (see recipe below)
  • splash of water (to taste)

Muddle (that’s just a fancy term for “squish”) mint and mint-infused simple syrup in a tall glass.  Add bourbon, water and ice, and stir.  Garnish with sprig of fresh mint.

Mint-infused simple syrup

  • 1 tablespoon dried mint (1/2 spearmint and 1/2 peppermint is best)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups water

Bring water to boil in saucepan, add mint and let steep for 20 minutes.  Add sugar and heat until sugar dissolves and water thickens to light syrup.

And there you have it!

It has been too long since my last blog post, so I am committed to getting better with it in the future.

You can help! What else would you like to see pop up in posts from me? Feel free to drop me a note!
